Royal Albert became particularly famous for its “Old Country Roses” series from the 1960s, which made English teaware instantly famous all across the world. Even today many people think that English antiques are Old Country Roses, while there is a lot more around!
What, under the shadow of its own success, is not well known about Royal Albert is that they made beautiful Art Deco items in the 1920s and 1930s. This is a simple cup and saucer from around 1930 and however modest it may look at first sight, the detail is stunning. The shape is a popular tapered shape that was often used in that period and the enamel has a slightly three-dimensional effect that is called “jewelled”, because it looks a bit like someone stuck on jewels.
