Lilac and mint green bliss from Wileman, 1899

This is quite a spectacular teaset for two, including a slop bowl and milk jug. It was made by Wileman in 1899 and it is so, so elegant! The decoration is called “Floral and Scroll pattern” (and it’s just that: beautiful wild flowers and formal, very Victorian scrolls) and it is applied on the Empire shape, which is one of Wileman’s most beautiful shapes. In case you are wondering, slop bowls were not used for sugar but to pour out the tea leaves that were left behind in the cups. It’s hard to imagine for us now, but tea bags and even strainers were not common until well into the 20th Century, so people just poured tea with leaves and all, and you’d dump the “slop” at the bottom of your cup into the slop bowl before getting a refill of tea. These bowls are just the perfect size for fruit or, if you’re really hungry, lots and lots of mini muffins 🙂 You can find the listing here in my Antiques shop.
